2023 First Quarter Music Preview
plus music by Sonny Rollins and books by Tyriek White, Tara Ison, & Rafael Frumkin
In this week’s public newsletter, I previewed the books that I most anticipate this year. Since books are only half of the Largehearted Boy equation, let’s examine the most anticipated music releases of 2023’s first quarter.
Black Belt Eagle Scout has shared several songs already from what sounds like her most fully realized album yet, The Land, The Water, The Sky (out February 10th).
Caroline Polachek previewed her new album Desire, I Want To Turn Into You with the interesting “Welcome To My Island.”
Guided by Voices’ La La Land (the band’s first album of the year) is out on January 20th.
The latest edition of Bob Dylan’s Bootleg series, Fragments - Time Out of Mind Sessions (1996-1997) is out on January 27th.
Meg Baird’s Furling, an early contender for my favorite album of 2023, is also out on January 27th.
Two bands that defy time are releasing albums this year on February 10th, Quasi (Breaking the Balls of History) and Yo La Tengo (This Stupid World).
February 24th brings new albums from Gina Birch (I Play My Bass Loud) and Algiers (Shook).
Fever Ray releases Radical Romantics on March 10th.
