A Playlist of Dog Songs, Plus Links, & Likes
A dog-themed playlist, an oral history of Crass Records, interviews with Lorrie Moore and Califone’s Tim Rutili, new fiction from Jac Jemc, and more
Hello from Brooklyn, where the air quality index has dipped from “hazardous” to merely “unhealthy for sensitive groups.”
This week’s themed playlist is songs about (or mentioning) dogs. A year ago Lily passed, my companion and friend for 16 years. When Largehearted Boy was my full-time job, she made sure I left the house during the day, sniffed the sunshine, and made new friends wherever we went. These songs are for her.

Este Haim on being executive music producer for National Geographic’s historical drama A Small Light
…I've always been a fan of score, and the John Williams and the Henry Mancinis and the Morricones of the world. I love listening to score and soundtracks. Also, I love film, always have. The Quietus’s oral history of Crass records
The label Crass Records was started in 1979 to remove control of Crass’ output from the hands of the music industry completely after the pressing plant that manufactured the original Small Wonder release of The Feeding Of The Five Thousand refused to include opening track ‘Reality Asylum’ on the grounds of blasphemy.A Conversation between Waxaahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield and Wednesday’s Karly Hartzman

Reconsidering Radiohead’s Hail to the Thief album on its 20th anniversary
These days, it seems a foregone conclusion that Hail To The Thief is the shaggy, flawed album in Radiohead’s history. While you might quibble about which songs to cut, pretty much everyone seems to agree that the album’s primary failing is that it could’ve used a bit more editing…Brontez Purnell on The Little Mermaid
This is not just a “children’s movie,” not at all. The Little Mermaid was made for people my age, trapped in the baggage of histories both collective and oh so deeply personal.Aquarium Drunkard’s interview with Califone’s Tim Rutili
The world feels a bit crackly and frantic. Adding some elements of old radio music from childhood to these songs felt good. This Guardian profile of Lorrie Moore
“I sort of see this book as not very funny. But maybe I’m wrong,” Moore says, holding her hand to her mouth to stifle a giggle, an endearing habit that, like her fiction, gives the impression she is always suppressing a joke. “I kind of saw it more as a grief-stricken book than a funny one.”
