Cover Songs as Revision
Recently I shared a newsletter about cover songs and disparaged them a bit. While pondering the genre afterward, I discovered that I do have a soft spot for certain covers that reimagine the original in some way. Peter Ho Davies, in his craft book The Art of Revision, made the point that cover songs are indeed a form of revision. That lens makes them infinitely more interesting to me.
